A sweet Smell of Success

Laurels just off Sandridge Road before pruning

In the 1930s, St Albans Council erected a combined bus shelter and public toilets in the south corner of Heath Field. Sometime in the early 1980s, the building was demolished, leaving some laurel bushes which were common landscaping accompaniments to such facilities.

The Friends felt that this activity is not desirable and the Council’s Green Spaces Department is in agreement. Their inclination is to remove the bushes entirely, but if that is the solution, they are not in a position to do it immediately.

It was suggested to the council that FoBH could easily do some manual pruning that would separate the bushes once again and reduce the cover for unwanted bodily functions. This was agreed to and three FoBH members recently restored the gaps between the bushes.

The photos show Before and After and the resulting pile of clippings, which the Council’s contractor will be taking away.

Please let us know if you see any of the unwanted activity still taking place.
